This exhibit illuminates the different faces of Henry Plant.  Meet Plant the promoter, the man who proudly displayed Florida exhibits at World’s Fairs and expos.  Get to know Plant the employer, who’s transportation empire included hospitals and a hospital rail car for injured workers.  Become acquainted with Plant the early adopter, who incorporated all the latest technologies into his businesses and hotels.

Henry Plant’s impact expanded far beyond the Tampa Bay area.  After Plant spent the latter part of the 19th century creating a network of railroads throughout the southeast, travel became much quicker and more reliable for thousands of people.  In particular, the Waycross Short Line, opened in 1881, was a shortcut between Waycross, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida.  This cut considerable time off many a journey.  Plant’s vision included more than railroads, and his empire also included steamships and eight hotels.  Visitors to this exciting new exhibit will walk away with new respect for this great Florida visionary, Henry Plant.
