The Museum brings history to life in the community through our Our and About with Upstairs Downstairs program. Hear Curator of Education Heather Trubee Brown speak about the history and importance of the Tampa Bay Hotel. After the talk, step back in time and enjoy a single-character performance of a turn-of–the-century Tampa Bay Hotel staff member. A question and answer session will round out the event.
Based on original research conducted by the Henry Plant Museum, the character Otis Freedman represents the professional black man of the era. He knows the “downstairs” viewpoint of the social goings-on at the Tampa Bay Hotel from a behind-the-scenes perspective. He knows how polite society should behave; not every guest can pass his “soup test.” Otis is a self-educated, intelligent man who overcomes the confinements of his station in life.
Otis Freedman is played by actor Josh Goff.
