University of Tampa professor of history Charles Groh will give a talk "Commanders of the Dining Room” on Oct. 29. Contemporaries compared the headwaiters of Gilded Age resort hotels to military officers who commanded their staff with precision and discipline. This talk recounts the lives of some of the actual men who held this leadership position in the Hotel's grand dining room. He will explore who could rise to the top rank of waiters in a luxury hotel. How could they keep this position in an era of immigration, racial strife, and a rapidly changing tourist industry?
